Jeremiah Embs Bible notes Misc Notes: on Gog and Magog Gog is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal (Ezekiel 38:1-3) so that Magog is probably a combination of those two lands or near them. We may be able to identify Magog for in the passage they are said to be allied with Persia (modern Iran also spelled Eran), Ethiopia, and Libya (vs 5). Meshech is associated with trade and the merchant marine vessels (like the Greeks have) of Tarshish (probably called Tarsus in the New Testament which is on the minor asian mainland north of the island of Cyprus) (Ez 38 & 27). Meshech was founded by the sons of Japtheth (1 Chronicles 1 & Gen 10) and we know that the sons of Japtheth controlled the Northern and Western nations of the ancient world. These clues point to the idea that Meshech is probably related to what we now call Turkey (or somewhere thereabouts) with the Aegean and Mediaterrian islands being the Gentile "isles" referred to in Ez 39:6 which the land of Magog dwells among in Isaiah 66:19 and Gen 10:2-5. This would be what we refer to in general as the anatolian area. It is written that they attack Israel from the North (Ez 38:15-16), but unlike some commenators have suggested Ezekiel 38 does not occur during the tribulation but rather after the millenillenal reign of Christ (whose 1000 year reign doesn't begin until AFTER the tribulation has ended and Satan is bound see Revelation 20:7-10). Ezekiel 39 however occurs during the tribulation (towards the end) at the battle of Armageddon (compare vs 39:5 & 17-21 to Revelation 19:11-18. The order of the two revelations are reversed in Ezekiel because blindness in part is happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in (Rom 11:25). It's in Revelation that we have the proper sequential order and can sort out the two prophecies separated by chapter headings (you still think the number divisions in the King James Bible aren't inspired?).
